Periodontal Disease and Stroke

Studies have implicated a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke.

Preliminary research suggests that gum disease can contribute to hardening of the arteries (clinically called atherosclerosis), along with blockages of the carotid artery. This is the main artery that supplies blood to the brain and when the blood supply is restricted or cut off, the result is a stroke.
