Additional studies have implicated a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. Hardening of the arteries, clinically called atherosclerosis, is one of the key risk factors of stroke. Preliminary research suggests that gum disease can contribute to blockages of the carotid artery, the main artery that supplies blood to the brain, when the blood supply is restricted or cut off the result is a stroke.
